Diary of a Native Femme(nist)

Kimberly Robertson (Mvskoke)

Opening Reception

Saturday, May 4th, 2024

5:00 PM - 8:00 PM

Exhibition runs May 4 - June 30, 2024

The Chapter House is pleased to present Diary of a Native Femme(nist), a solo exhibition of new and recent works by Kimberly Robertson. The works on view draw from her embodied experiences as a Mvskoke woman born, raised, living, and working on unceded California Indian lands and are heavily informed by Native feminist theories and practices. Robertson utilizes high-femme aesthetics to address the myriad forms of violence Native femmes experience under settler colonialism and cisheteropatriarchy while also encouraging viewers to consider the radical practice of making joy and laughter in service of collective healing and liberation.

Kimberly Robertson is a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, an Associate Professor of American Indian Studies at California State University, Long Beach, and an artist. Her scholarship and creative practices center Native feminisms, the sexual and gendered violence of settler colonialism, ceremony, storytelling, decolonization, and Indigenous futurities.  She has published in journals such as Decolonization: Indigeneity, Education, and Society and Wicazo Sa Review, as well as peer-reviewed anthologies such as Otherwise Worlds: Against Settler Colonialism and Anti-Blackness and Keetsahnak: Our Missing and Murdered Indigenous Sisters. Her creative practices currently include screen printing, collage, beadwork, installation art, and zine-making.  Her artworks have been exhibited in numerous community, university, public, and private galleries as well as peer-reviewed monographs and anthologies. She is also an active member of the Los Angeles Indian community and facilitates beading circles and art-making workshops both locally and nationally.

Demon Mineral Screening

Please join The Chapter House Monday, April 22, from 6:30 - 8:30 pm for a special screening of the award-winning film Demon Mineral

Demon Mineral, directed by Hadley Austin, co-written by Dr. Tommy Rock, and produced by Emma Robbins and Nevo Shinaar, is an account of life in the wake of uranium mining on sacred lands. Shot over the course of four years with Diné community collaboration, guidance, and oversight, the film examines the legacy of uranium extraction from the perspectives of both the landscape and its inhabitants. Framed entirely by Indigenous voices and testimonies, Demon Mineral is about an active, multigenerational process of reclamation.

Hadley Austin will be present alongside Emma Robbins for a Q + A after the screening. Snacks and refreshments (and zines!) will be provided. (Feel free to bring your own dinner if this is during your supper time!) Our address is 1770 Glendale Blvd., but please enter at the gate on Branden St. Parking is available on residential streets around The Chapter House. This event is free and open to all. Save the Man - Call Her Savage Screening

  • Autry Museum of the American West (map)

UCLA Film & Television Archive and Autry Museum of the American West present

Save the Man presents an assembly of titles showcasing an overlooked trend in pre-Code Hollywood: studio films that openly confronted the contemporary consequences of this nation’s fraught history with Indigenous peoples after they were granted citizenship in 1924. Featuring a melodrama about a mixed-race woman coming to terms with her identity, a tale of Native Alaskan revenge, a doomed Navajo Nation bordertown romance, and a violent uprising led by a Wild West Show performer against a corrupt government, these four forgotten films each reflect the era’s affinity for breaking on-screen taboos and imperfect examinations of contemporaneous prejudices. They stand out as being both of their time and beyond the studio filmmaking of today.

Notes written and program curated by Adam Piron.

Special thanks to our community partners: The Chapter House, LA Skins Fest.

Please note that this screening will be held at the Autry Museum. Tickets are available on the Autry Museum website.

Call Her Savage

U.S., 1932

The penultimate role of Hollywood’s original “It Girl,” Clara Bow stars as Nasa Springer, a rebellious, young Texan who burns through life quicker than she can take it in. Her reckless ways take her on a riches-to-rags story accented by flourishes of 1930s opulence and human tragedy, leading her to a startling revelation about her true heritage. Notable for its plays on stereotypes of mixed-race Indigeneity as well as early instances of openly gay characters on screen, Bow’s performance ultimately commands sympathy for the plight of a people unable to fully fit within either of their worlds in the early 20th century.

35mm, b&w, 88 min. Director: John Francis Dillon. Writer: Edwin J. Burke. With: Clara Bow, Gilbert Roland, Thelma Todd.

Massacre

U.S., 1934

Chief Joe Thunder Horse (Richard Barthelmess) is the top draw in the Wild West show he tours with, and he won’t let anyone forget it. Whether it’s speeding his gaudy sports car, bedding white women or demanding higher pay, Joe unapologetically lives life fast — until word reaches him from the reservation that his father is dying. He returns home to find his community in disarray and under the rule of a corrupt white government official and a group of con men. Pushed to breaking point, he leads his tribe to revolt against their oppressors in an explosive, damning finale.

16mm, b&w, 70 min. Director: Alan Crosland. Writer: Sheridan Gibney, Ralph Block, Robert Gessner. With: Richard Barthelmess, Ann Dvorak, Henry O'Neill.

Eskimo

U.S. 1933

Filmed on location in then-Alaskan Territory, Eskimo (a descriptor now considered a racial slur) follows the life of Mala (Iñupiaq actor Ray Mala) and the everyday life of his community. After the death of one of his wives at the hands of corrupt fur traders, Mala exacts revenge and is forced to go on the run. Although a box office disappointment, W.S. Van Dyke’s motion picture received the first Oscar for Best Film Editing, and was also the first U.S. feature filmed in an Indigenous language, offering viewers today a unique look at early sound-era cinema’s experimentation with subtitles.

16mm, b&w, 117 min. Director: W.S. Van Dyke. Writer: John Lee Mahin, Peter Freuchen. With: Ray Mala.

Laughing Boy

U.S., 1934

Laughing Boy (Ramón Novarro), a Navajo silversmith, does his best to entertain and sell his wares to the hordes of grotesque American tourists who visit his reservation daily. He gains the affection of Slim Girl (Lupe Vélez), a Native woman raised by white people, who many in the tribe believe to be leading a life of sin in the nearby town. A doomed love triangle forms between her, Laughing Boy, and her white former lover that exposes the racism, exploitation and misogyny at the root of reservation border towns, Indian trading posts and the tourism they thrive on.

16mm, b&w, 79 min. Director: W.S. Van Dyke. Writer: John Colton, John Lee Mahin. With: Ramón Novarro, Lupe Vélez.

The Chapter House X La La Land Back Tour Drag Story Hour

Join The Chapter House for an afternoon of reading with Native Drag Queens Lady Shug and Landa Lakes!

Lady Shug and Landa Lakes will be reading 2 books, including Koni, written by Sherrie Begay, Kari A.B. Chew, Steffani A. Cochran, and Donna Courtney Welch. Geared toward young readers, this monolingual children’s book encourages immersion in a vital Native American language as it teaches about opposites. Readers follow engaging, whimsical Koni (the Chickasaw word for skunk) through a variety of day-to-day situations designed to help young readers sniff out opposites like big and little, wet and dry, hungry and full. Koni’s illustrations make the accompanying Chickasaw phrases easy to understand and learn. The book also features an English-to-Chickasaw glossary to further facilitate learning.

This event is in collaboration with the nonprofit Drag Story Hour. Drag Story Hour celebrates reading through the glamorous art of drag. The goals of Drag Story Hour are to build empathy, allow kids to express their authentic selves and become bright lights of change in their communities.
